Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses
Nurses have access to some of the best loan forgiveness options available—including programs that can eliminate up to 85% of debt in just 2-3 years. Here's everything you need to know about Nurse Corps, NHSC, PSLF, and state programs.

Nurse Corps and NHSC can potentially be used before or alongside PSLF. Example: Complete 2 years of Nurse Corps (60% of debt paid), then continue 8 more years toward PSLF for remaining balance forgiveness.
Choosing the Right Path
Best for fast debt elimination:
Nurse Corps LRP — Get 60-85% forgiven in 2-3 years. Ideal if you're willing to work at a Critical Shortage Facility.
Best for complete forgiveness:
PSLF — 100% forgiveness, but requires 10 years. Best if you already work at a qualifying hospital and want maximum long-term benefit.
Best combination strategy:
- Start with Nurse Corps for 2-3 years (eliminate majority of debt)
- If remaining balance is significant, continue making PSLF payments
- After total of 10 years, any remaining balance forgiven via PSLF
For Travel Nurses
Travel nursing typically doesn't qualify for PSLF because the staffing agency (your employer) usually isn't a 501(c)(3). To pursue PSLF, you'd need to work directly for qualifying hospitals rather than through agencies.
State Programs
Many states offer additional loan repayment for nurses, especially in shortage areas. Examples:
- California: SNAPLE program for nurses in state facilities
- Texas: Nursing Faculty Loan Repayment Program
- Minnesota: Health Professional Loan Forgiveness
- New York: Regents Awards for Children of Deceased/Disabled Veterans
Check your state's Department of Health or nursing board for available programs.
Application Timeline Tips
- Nurse Corps: Application typically opens February, decisions by September
- NHSC: May 1 deadline for most programs
- PSLF: No deadline—submit Employment Certification annually while working
